Shelley Starkey, a retired School Psychologist, brings a diverse and accomplished athletic background to her role as the Head Pickleball Pro at the Albany Tennis Club. A former high-level competitive tennis player and juniors’ coach, she has also excelled in a variety of sports including softball, mountain biking, ice hockey and triathlon. Her journey into pickleball began at her local health club over ten years ago, where she quickly fell in love with game.
Now competing at the 4.0/4.5 level, Shelley has earned numerous medals in pickleball tournaments throughout Oregon and Washington. Her proudest achievement to date is winning gold in women’s doubles at the 2023 Senior National Games in Pittsburgh, PA, her home state. In her coaching, Shelley draws on her psychology background, extensive athletic experience and passion for pickleball to help players of all ages, abilities and skill levels grow their game and enjoy their time on the court. Shelley’s students describe her as welcoming, positive, encouraging, patient, funny, energetic and having the ability to tailor lessons to each student’s needs. She prides herself on forming meaningful relationships with each student to understand their motivations, strengths and goals while building trust and creating a relaxed supportive, fun environment.
